Writing a quality proposal requires strategic planning. Before drafting a proposal or letter of inquiry, be sure you can answer these fundamental questions.

What
  1. What are you planning to do?
  2. What specific needs will you address?
  3. What is the goal of your project?
Who
  1. Who will implement the program?
  2. Who will benefit from the program?
When
  1. When will the project take place (timeline for activities)?
  2. When is funding needed?
Where
  1. Where will the program be implemented?
  2. Will the program involve urban, rural, or underserved communities?
Why
  1. Why is your project different from others who are doing similar work?
  2. Why is the University of Utah qualified to undertake this project?
  3. Why would a grant maker want to fund this project?
How
  1. How much will it cost to implement your program? (Provide line-item detail.)
  2. How will funding be needed over the term of the project? (Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc.)
  3. How will you fund elements of the program not addressed by your funding proposal?
  4. How will you sustain the program once foundation funding is complete?
  5. How does the project relate to the strategic goals or mission of the university?

Once you have complete answers to all of these questions, you can begin writing a letter of inquiry or a proposal. As you write, keep the style tips provided in mind. These guidelines will help you write a successful proposal.
