Proposal Writing
Writing a quality proposal requires strategic planning. Before drafting a proposal or letter of inquiry, be sure you can answer these fundamental questions.
What
- What are you planning to do?
- What specific needs will you address?
- What is the goal of your project?
Who
- Who will implement the program?
- Who will benefit from the program?
When
- When will the project take place (timeline for activities)?
- When is funding needed?
Where
- Where will the program be implemented?
- Will the program involve urban, rural, or underserved communities?
Why
- Why is your project different from others who are doing similar work?
- Why is the University of Utah qualified to undertake this project?
- Why would a grant maker want to fund this project?
How
- How much will it cost to implement your program? (Provide line-item detail.)
- How will funding be needed over the term of the project? (Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc.)
- How will you fund elements of the program not addressed by your funding proposal?
- How will you sustain the program once foundation funding is complete?
- How does the project relate to the strategic goals or mission of the university?
Once you have complete answers to all of these questions, you can begin writing a letter of inquiry or a proposal. As you write, keep the style tips provided in mind. These guidelines will help you write a successful proposal.
