Maggie Hicken

The Hicken endowed chair was established in the Fall of 2000, through a generous gift from the Hicken family, combined with internal and external funds. Dr. Hicken worked closely with Utah's rural family medicine doctors who referred their patients to him for their surgical care. The working relationship between Dr. James Freston and Takeda Pharmaceuticals dates back to the late 1990’s when Dr. Freston was Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Salt Lake City-born Candace Cartwright and Ogden native Thomas “Tim” D. Dee III may have grown up merely 40 miles apart, but it would take both moving to Portland, Oregon for the Utahns to meet. At Lewis & Clark College, Candace, the daughter of George E. Cartwright, M.D., who chaired the Department of Medicine at the University of Utah for more than two decades and initiated its genetics program, met Tim, the great grandson of Annie Taylor Dee, who established Ogden’s first non-profit hospital in 1910. Hospital Volunteer Keeps on Giving to Help Utah Medical Students

Eunice Kronstadt was a volunteer Patient Advocate at the University of Utah Hospital for 17 years, starting when she was 72 years old. She retired in 2009 after providing 7,075 hours of service, and she says it was "one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."  Read more...

Local Concert Promoter Organizes Benefit Concert for Autism

Kristen Rupert, local entrepreneur/concert promoter, who also works for Zumiez at the Fashion Place Mall, decided to take matters into her own hands.  Kristen chose to raise autism awareness after learning that her immediate boss at Zumiez has a child with Autism. Together, with her collegues in the Saxony Project , arranged a benefit concert for the Autism Hope Fund that raised over $1,092.  Read more...

The Lawrence T. and Janet T. Dee Foundation

The invention of the rail brought opportunity to America, and to the life of Ogden, Utah native Lawrence (Laurie) Taylor Dee, it also brought a sweetheart. In 1914, while returning to Utah on a train from the east coast where he had completed a bachelor of arts at Cornell University, the 23-year-old met Colorado native Janet Sears Teller. Grateful Medical Student Gives back to Help Others

Kent and Teri Jex were high school sweethearts and married soon after graduation.  Then came the schooling, lots of it: first college, then four years of medical school, five years of residency and two years of fellowship training culminating in Kent becoming a cardio-thoracic surgeon.  By the time Kent started his first year at the University of Utah Medical School they already had two children and by graduation they had three with a fourth on the way. Susan provides specialized recycling services on campus for departments that don't use other means of recycling pick-up. Bertrand and his parents are wonderful examples of a fundraising family.  Bertrand was born on December 9, 2007; Bertrand is a charming, serious, young man. He lives in Salt Lake City, UT with his parents Matt and Cristina. Bertrand suffers from a TBD genetic disorder, his symptoms include: global developmental delays, leukodystrophy, multifocal epilepsy, neuropathy, autism, cortical visual impairment, movement disorder and lack of tears (alacrima).  At first glance, clinician-researcher Christopher Peters, M.D., and fundraising professional Arthur Swindle don't appear to have much in common.  But looks can be deceiving.  Admiration and appreciation for the talents and dedication of both have fostered a $1 million grant from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation to the University of Utah's Department of Orthopaedics.  The gift, announced today, creates a prestigious endowed chair to provide perpetual support for innovation among the U's top Orthopaedics faculty.  Read more...
