Dr. Raymond Price, Director of the Center for Global Surgery, Professor of Surgery and Associate Adjunct Professor of Public Health at the University of Utah, recently addressed the Mexican Senate at a Safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy forum. In Mexico only about 15% of potential patients have surgery by laparoscopy. This minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is effective in reducing morbidity and increasing recovery time, resulting in fewer complications as well as long term economic benefits.
Price is co-chair of the Global Affairs Committee for SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) which presented to the Asociación Mexicana de Cirugía General (AMCG) in Mexico City last fall. Dr. Price also participated in a Safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy panel as part of an effort with SAGES to launch the iLAP Mastery and Education Program to Improve Global Surgical Outcomes course.
Dr. Price talked about the unique nature of the iLAP program in training not only laparoscopic surgeons, but also training educators in a standardized method for maintaining best practices for future generations of surgeons.
SAGES is working to garner resources for laparoscopy in Mexico, working on the quality education and standards component of the training. They hope to establish 9 quality training centers in laparoscopy throughout Mexico.
