Welcome to University of Utah Health Sciences Interprofessional Education (IPE). We provide IPE training, including direct clinical experiences and simulation-based training, for approximately 500 students at the Colleges of Health, Nursing and Pharmacy, the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine, and the College of Social Work.
Our mission is to develop the premier IPE program in the nation that equips health professions trainees with the essential interprofessional competencies to lead the transformation of US health care.
We also aim to become a focal point for collaboration with both local and national stakeholders to advance both the science of interprofessional practice and the health of our community.
We actively engage with stakeholders in non-medical disciplines. This engagement contributes to the Quadruple Aim: enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and promoting joy in practice for health care professionals (Bodenheimer and Sinsky, Ann Fam Med 2014).
Founding & History
Interprofessional Education at the University of Utah Health Sciences began in 2002 and, under the leadership of Dr. Vivian Lee and Dr. Rebecca Wilson, has become a national leader in simulation-based interprofessional training. Today, IPE program faculty members represent all five University of Utah Health Colleges and Schools as well as the College of Social Work.
Interprofessional Student Hotspotting Learning Collaborative
A significant milestone for the program was its entry in 2016 within the Camden Coalition/Primary CareProgress/AAMC Interprofessional Student Hotspotting Learning Collaborative. As a member of this collaborative, IPE aims to provide a community-based interprofessional learning experience, while also demonstrating value to the health care system by reducing health care utilization such as unnecessary hospital readmissions.
