LGBT 2013 Ally Awareness Week Features Hate Crime Victim Erin Davies

The theme for this year’s Ally Awareness Week at the University of Utah (the U) will be “Stand. Speak. Act.” Organized annually by the LGBT Resource Center, activities will take place Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19. Derived from the word ally – someone who advocates for and supports members of a community other than their own – the celebration honors those who reach across their differences to achieve mutual respect and inclusion. This year’s list of events will be highlighted by a screening of the documentary “Fagbug,” followed by a discussion with creator Erin Davies on Tuesday, April 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the J. University of Utah Names Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Ruth V. Watkins will bring her extensive experience as an educator and administrator to the University of Utah as the new senior vice president for academic affairs. Currently the dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois and professor of speech and hearing science, psychology and linguistics, Watkins was selected after a national search. David Pershing held the position for 14 years before becoming president in 2012. Read More

Days of Remembrance Features Peter Black, Senior Historian of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The University of Utah commemorates Days of Remembrance with activities from April 10-11. The theme for this year is “70 Years Later: Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising” and features a keynote address by Peter Black, Senior Historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Black will speak on Thursday, April 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the U’s Carol Tanner Irish Humanitarian Building Lecture Hall, room 109. Prior to the keynote, there will be a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. in the same building on the patio and labyrinth. Read More
