What Is Mission-Based Management

The University of Utah School of Medicine is known as one of ~15 Mission-Based Management (MBM) Schools of the ~140 Schools of Medicine in the US. Many schools do MBM-like activities but refer to them by a different name. Utah is recognized as a school that has fully developed the three main components of MBM: 1) mission-based financial reporting; 2) faculty productivity oversight; and 3) strategic planning with a mission focus.

MBM is an organizational effort within University of Utah Health that focuses on the alignment of what we do, why we do it, and how we pay for it. Most people know us from our internal systems, our financial processes, and reporting, or our planning efforts.

How Does MBM Work?

MBM is a process for organizational decision-making that is:

  • Mission-driven
  • Assures internal accountability
  • Distributes resources in alignment with organization-wide goals
  • Based on timely, open, and accurate information

MBM is a resource for University of Utah Health as it serves as an infrastructure for financial/data analysis, system/process development, and a forum for discussion and decision-making related to policy and planning. MBM balances its routine responsibilities, such as financial reporting, faculty reporting, and budgeting, with new projects and needs identified institutionally. 


The School of Medicine Executive Committee (SOM EC) oversees all MBM efforts and is advisory to the Dean of the School of Medicine.
